Its, A Mother’s Day Poem
Durable, flexible, intelligent,
Best workhorses ever created.
Eyes pained.
Backs flogged.
These its,
These puny its have no value.
Mouths starved.
Necks choked.
Shoulders bruised.
Torsos kicked.
These its,
These puny its have no voices.
Legs spread wide.
Ears boxed.
Faces slapped.
Hair unkempt.
These its,
These puny its have no value.
Who are these its?
Forgotten and unacknowledged,
Running, pleading, fearing for their lives.
These its,
These puny its have no voices.
The brunt of war carried in their flesh.
While men pat themselves on the back for heroism.
These its,
These puny its have no value.
Oh, women of the world,
I know today is Mother’s Day,
But your its are being attacked.
Bellies impregnated by rape,
Faces scarred by encrusted, scabrous hands,
Disfigured bodies with lost limbs,
These its,
These puny its have no voices.
Slaughtered,
Murdered,
Gassed,
Shot down,
Their psyches damaged.
These its,
These puny its have no value.
Hands grabbed,
Bound and cast to the ground,
Legs spread wide and raped,
Whore,
Bitch,
Slut,
Cunt,
Their Psyches branded.
These its,
These puny its have no voices.
Oh, women of the world,
Today is Mother’s Day,
But these its are our sisters,
Shouldn’t our voices become theirs?
This poem is dedicated to every woman trapped by war at this moment wherever they are, in whatever country.

Good Morning Joe,
I like your words; they spring from your heart, “Truth is Better than Fiction.” Sometimes I think we use fiction as an excuse to not be aware of what is going on in the world. Yet, all of the great fiction writers, Dickens, Tolstoy, the Bronte Sisters, George Elliot, Jane Austen, and so many more wrote their fiction in my opinion to point out the idiosyncrasies of life and the problems, regardless of what the problems were. That we have redefined fiction to be an escape hatch where thinking is not required or the emotions are only touched on a superficial level is sad, and as writers we must change that.
Thank you for sharing your thought. It provoke me to think.

My Dear Susan,
Thank you for sharing this on Facebook. Thank you for your Dream series that helped me focus on what my inner voice was telling me. You have planted seeds in my life and one of those seeds is allowing the reality of my dreams to take place in my life. And so this poem was born out of the need to make us aware of what is happening to women around the world on this Mother’s Day. The poem is not a women’s liberation poem, but what I aimed to do was to awaken us to realize that we are denigrating the spirit within us when we mishandle another human being. To not respect the inalienable right of another person whether male or female to become a healthy person with a healthy mind destroys that our humanity and makes us no better than animals.

A very powerful truth Patti. Thank you for this tribute for Mother’s Day. I truly believe we as women all feel the same empathy, and I sincerely hope this post reaches some of those who suffer at the hands of the monsters. It might give comfort to their heart knowing that we know how they are suffering and that we care.

… Best workhorses ever created … succinctly sums up the prevailing attitude towards women in the world, depending on how much their social environment entraps. The daughters, mother and grandmothers you speak for most likely have no means to enable them to reach out. You deep feelings poignantly invoke the lives of millions of women.
