The Champions Who Walked Among Us

A Special Mother’s Day Tribute and the Introduction to the Article, But It’s Mother’s Day

This year’s Mother’s Day article, But It’s Mother’s Day, is a tribute to all those mothers who have lived through the agony of having a child precede them in death.  No mother expects to see her child leave this earth before she does: it is the mother’s heart that dreams of life–long life– for her children even before they are born.

I would also like to salute two women whom I have come to love, respect, and admire.

Micki Peluso, author of And The Whippoorwill Sang,[1] whose daughter’s life was cut off by a drunken driver.  Micki tells Noelle’s story, and therefore her own story with heart. Full of humor and wit, And The Whippoorwill Sang draws you into the Peluso family: it also takes you through a gamut of emotions from anger to hatred, to laughter, to tears that will force you to support a zero tolerance for people who drink and drive.

Linda Halpin is the author of an upcoming book about her son, Louie, who was shot down in New York City. As a mother, she was suddenly thrown into the woes of lost.  Louie was a child with a promise, a future boxer whose future stopped on a fatal afternoon as he innocently visited his friends. Linda’s book is expected to be release sometime this year.

Both of these women have gone through the dark night of their souls, and they have come through it with renewed strength to step up to the plate and speak out against violence that has been done, not only against their children, but against children all over the world.

Happy Mother’s Day!

    • Thank you my dear friend for your lovely tribute to these women. It means a lot to me.
I thank you also for your special tribute to me that I will pass along and lay at the altar of sacrifice to my Lord. The idea, the centering of the article came to me over seven days ago. I really struggled with it. I was sometimes up with it and then suddenly down in the valley. For a woman who has never conceived a child, I was surprised at the gamut of my emotions.

      Shalom,
      Pat

    • Thank you. There are so many women whom I would have love to acknowledge but these two women, Micki Peluso and Linda Halpin represent the majority. Two fine women and authors whom I have the privilege of knowing.

    • Good morning Jeanne,
Thank you for sharing with me on this post. It was one of the most difficult articles that I have written so far––the cry of grieving mothers.
God bless you and Happy Mother’s Day.

      Shalom,

  7. Thank you my friend for highlighting my friend Linda Halpin and me as examples of what the loss of a child is lije–which no one knows until it happenes to them. That’s also why your tribute to mothers had me sobbing–even when you think you’re past the worst of it you get jolted back to the past and the grief and loss all over again. you never forget and as for me I never want to. I’m so grateful I have my book so that when I miss Noelle as I so often do, I kept the memories that might have faded over time. And now to see her alive again, all I have to do is open my book.

    Love, Micki

    • My Dear Micki,

Your Noelle lives also in my heart. Your book is a constant reminder to me of a mother’s love for her child. Thank you for telling her story. I feel as if I have met her through you and believe me when I think of the egg story that you wrote in the book, I can’t help but laugh at Noelle’s getting her fried eggs. She was indeed an intuitive kid with a big heart. According to my faith, Noelle is more alive than ever. She lives in eternity and I will meet her one day.

      I love you Micki.

      Shalom,
      Patricia
